What is ADAS?
An ADAS, or Advanced Driver Assistance System, is a technology designed to improve driving safety and comfort. These systems offer active and passive assistance to the driver, intervening directly in the vehicle’s operation or providing crucial warnings to avoid accidents.Benefits of ADAS
- Reduces the number and severity of road accidents
- Protects pedestrians
- Reduces human error
- Detects obstacles on the road at night
- Detects imminent danger
iRASTE’s Report on ADAS Technology in Nagpur
The integration of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) technology with Aapli buses has yielded wonderful results in Nagpur.
The ADAS technology was developed under Project iRASTE (a collaborative initiative by the government and IIT Hyderabad).
ADAS Technology Leads to 41% Drop in Aapli Bus Accidents in Nagpur
According to the report by iRASTE, the number of accidents in Nagpur significantly decreased between January 2023 and August 2023.
The data revealed that Aapli buses equipped with ADAS technology have witnessed an astounding 41% decrease in bus accidents in Nagpur.
This showcases the potential of technology in transforming urban mobility, prioritising road safety and efficiency for the benefit of road users.
ADAS Technology Leads to 30% Decrease in Monthly Driver Risk Scores
According to the report, similar changes have been brought by the ADAS technology in driver risk scores.Since the project's launch, monthly driver risk scores have been reduced by 30%, thanks to the Advanced Driver Assistance System’s ability to detect risky situations and alert the driver.
ADAS Technology for Blackspot Detection
The iRASTE project has also prepared detailed Geometric Design Plans (GDP) for 38 blackspot locations in Nagpur in an attempt to focus more on road safety concerns in the city, such as black spots.
Besides, remedial measures were also implemented at four blackspot locations in Nagpur that can potentially reduce accidents by 60%.
Mobility Safety Analysis, one of the vectors of the iRASTE project, has introduced the novel technique of predicting potential grey spots on the road network for the first time in India.
This has allowed the team to get dynamically generated ADAS data on grey spots (potential blackspots) and helped them to take appropriate actions like delivering a set of measures for two of the most unsafe corridors and the top 16 grey spots in the city.
Other Highlights
- iRASTE has been quite useful in improving road safety, reducing the number of road accidents and bringing about changes in the driving behaviour of Aapli bus drivers.
- Moreover, due to the different road-owning agencies in action, the work towards eradication of blackspots is taking some extra time.
- To date, networks of community-based emergency first responders (i.e., Trystander Cells) equipped with essential first aid resources such as first aid kits and stretchers have been installed at eight blackspot locations in Nagpur.
- Thanks to these resources, the local first responders have saved 36 victims of road crashes around the blackspots (between August 2023 and April 2024).
Conclusion
ADAS plays a fundamental role in driving safety and efficiency, paving the way to a future where accidents could be drastically reduced.
For this reason, it is important to ensure that your next vehicle has these advanced systems with proper windshield calibration.
