Monsoon Car Care: 5 Important Tips for Windshield Wipers of Your Car

Nothing is as fickle as the weather; therefore, it is essential that we are as prepared as we can be to face any type of situation. Something as vital to our day-to-day lives as our car certainly needs to be all-weather-ready! Our car's windshield wipers are a critical component in helping us stay safe from one of the most plaguing weather conditions. It is thus better to be safe than sorry, better to maintain and accordingly take timely steps for your windshield wipers than being stuck in a sudden downpour on the road.
Here are 5 important tips that will help you maintain the windshield wipers of your car.
Tip#1 Keep Your Windshield Clean
Keeping your windshield clean is the easiest way to save your wipers. If you turn on your wipers on a dirty windshield, dirt and everything else on the windshield would not only damage the wiper blades but also possibly lead to scratches on the windshield itself. It is important to remember that it is a two-way street between the windshield and the wiper; keeping one dirty or in bad shape will certainly damage the other. The safest way to clean your windshield is to use a microfiber cloth and a glass cleaner. A microfiber cloth is soft, has no loose threads or fibres and cleans more easily. Using any other cloth might damage or put scratches on your windshield.
Tip#2 Keep Your Wiper Blades Clean and In Good Shape
As mentioned, the windshield and the wiper blades depend on each other to sustain themselves. Additionally, keeping them in good condition is imperative for you as restricted visibility due to a malfunctioning wiper blade or a damaged windshield is a safety concern. All you need is a little time for maintenance. You might have noticed that your wiper blades make a screeching sound on coming in contact with the windshield when you switch them on during the first monsoon showers. The screeching sound is indicative of the presence of friction between the wiper blades and the windshield, which, if not dealt with, can cause severe damage.
To clean your blades, all you need is a microfiber cloth and water; any other substance can leave a residue which can, in turn, cause friction. If the screeching sound persists, you can apply Vaseline to soften the rubber.
Tip#3 Do Not Run Your Wiper Blades on a Dry Windshield!
Here, we would like to emphasise on the words, 'Do not.' Since rubber and glass do not go well together, there needs to be some kind of lubricant between them, think water. Wiper blades are meant to be used in the rain; hence if you switch them on when the windshield is dry, it will create friction which will only cause damage. So, if you have to turn them on when you are driving, do so using the washer fluid spray mode. The soapy water released will not only reduce friction and save your windshield and wiper blades but will help the latter in doing a better job of cleaning.
Tip#4 Ensure Unrestricted Movement of Your Wiper Blades
A critical thing to check is that your wiper blades are moving as they are supposed to. Weather and regular wear can over-tighten the screws or make them weak. It is a good idea to check the screws on the wiper blades at regular intervals and take the necessary steps to fix any issues.
Tip#5 Know When to Replace Your Wiper Blades
While all of the above-mentioned tips will increase the life of your wiper blades, they will eventually wear out. It is crucial to notice the signs and get your wiper blades replaced in time to prevent any damage to your windshield.
If the rubber on the wiper is torn, split or cracked, if you continuously see patches of water being missed by the blade (which can be due to a bent frame); or if you see rust or metal corrosion on the frames, you should get your windshield wiper blades replaced immediately.
