National Highways Authority of India (NHAI)
As car ownership increases rapidly, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is transforming road safety standards by leveraging AI technology. By creating a strategic partnership with IIIT Delhi, NHAI is set to implement new strategies and bring about change. With these advancements, the potential hazards can be avoided significantly. Let us discuss how AI is helping improve road safety standards and the advancements implemented by the NHAI to create a better future.

New Advancements Implemented by the NHAI to Enhance Road Safety

  • According to the MoU between the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Delhi, the latter will conduct surveys of selected national highways.
  • The survey is tentatively scheduled for around 25,000 km of the selected national highways.
  • The survey will include categorisation of existing geo-stamped road signs’ inventory.
  • These road signs will be identified and categorised based on the data acquired by the AI-based imagery.
  • The intent of this survey is also to conduct a “gap study”. This will help identify the road sign requirements according to the road development contracts and survey findings.
  • According to the ministry, with AI technology and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the data will help improve road-related conditions. It will also help predict traffic patterns, identify accident-prone areas, and recommend the most effective locations for road signs.
  • It will use the latest Codal Provisions for high-speed corridors to enhance the safety requirements and signs.

How Does AI Signs Help in Improving Road Safety?

AI signs would play a vital role in enhancing road safety by using advanced algorithms to monitor and respond to real-time traffic conditions. AI can provide us with insightful data on high-risk areas by reviewing historical data on weather conditions and traffic patterns and reports on accidents. AI signs can communicate with connected vehicles to alert drivers of obstacles or congestion ahead, significantly reducing accident risks. It can also create a predictive analysis and update NHAI about upcoming road maintenance schedules to avoid potholes or missed road markings.

 AI’s Contribution for Better Future

With the incorporation of AI in traffic management by NHAI, we can expect the following advancements in the coming years:
  • Analysis of behaviour patterns like being sleepy behind the wheel and communicating with the drivers or nearby traffic controllers of the same.
  • Communication with connected vehicles to alert drivers of obstacles or congestion ahead, significantly reducing accident risks.
  • It can help develop systems to alert drivers about pedestrians, animals or cyclists on the route to avoid accidents.
  • Integration with traffic signs in smart or busy cities can help manage traffic efficiently by predicting the traffic flow, potential congestion issues, diverting traffic flow and improving the traffic environment.

 Conclusion

Road safety has long been a concern. As technology advances, road conditions and traffic management systems improve. Using AI and machine learning algorithms, the NHAI is planning to enhance traffic conditions, starting with a few national highways.

Additionally, it is crucial to maintain safety standards to further improve your vehicle's safety on the roads. A small bee’s wing or a minor scratch on your car windshield may seem harmless but can lead to higher risks.
