The most common cause of windshield cracks is impact from a rock or other debris that is kicked up by the tyres of other vehicles.

However, cracks can also be caused by extreme temperature changes, manufacturing defects, and other types of impacts. Once a crack has formed in a windshield, it can continue to spread over time due to the stresses placed on the glass.

This is particularly likely to happen if the crack is not repaired promptly, as the glass is more prone to breaking under stress when it is already weakened by a crack.

What are the different types of windshield cracks?

There are several types of windshield cracks that can occur, including:

  • Chips: Small, shallow cracks or divots in the windshield that are usually caused by flying debris, such as rocks or gravel.

  • Bulls-eye: A circular crack that radiates outward from a central point, often caused by a larger object, such as a baseball or a hailstone.

  • Star breaks: A series of radiating cracks that resemble a starburst, typically caused by a sharp impact, such as from a hammer or a stone.

  • Combination breaks: A combination of different types of cracks, such as a bulls-eye with a star break in the center.

  • Half-moon: A crescent-shaped crack that runs along the edge of the windshield. The main cause of windshield cracks is impact from objects.

What are the causes of windshield cracks?

However, there are several factors that can contribute to the spread of a crack, including:

  • Temperature fluctuations: When the temperature changes, the glass in the windshield expands and contracts, which can cause cracks to spread.

  • Vibrations: Vibrations from driving or other sources can cause cracks to spread over time.

  • Pressure: Changes in air pressure, such as when driving through a tunnel or over a mountain pass, can cause cracks to spread.

  • Poor repair: If a crack is improperly repaired, it may continue to spread or even break completely.

Why Do Windshield Cracks Spread?

It's important to address windshield cracks as soon as possible to prevent them from spreading and potentially compromising the structural integrity of the windshield.

If you have a crack in your windshield, it's best to have it evaluated by a professional to determine the best course of action.
